OAKVILLE, ON –(COMMUNITYWIRE)– Workers and community allies are coming together at the Chartwell Waterford Retirement Residence in Oakville to highlight outstanding issues in their ongoing negotiations. CUPE Ontario Secretary Treasurer Yolanda McLean will be present to deliver remarks in support of rallying staff.
Their last contract expired in April of 2024. In the year since, the bargaining committee has made every effort to push for a contract that recognizes the dedication and demands of the workers. Central priorities include paid sick days, benefits, and wage improvements.
Under the current collective agreement these workers only receive 3 paid sick days. As all Ontarians learned through the difficult years of the pandemic, paid sick days are an essential tool in preventing the spread of illnesses amongst the public. Chartwell Waterford workers are dedicated to providing the best care possible to all residents and their families. This includes staying home when sick – a basic safety measure that all workers deserve.
Chartwell Waterford Retirement Residence workers are members of CUPE Local 1404. CUPE 1404 President Karen Shimoda as well as CUPE Ontario Secretary Treasurer Yolanda McLean will be available to answer questions.
