ST. ALBERT, AB –(COMMUNITYWIRE)– School support workers, members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) will hold a rally tomorrow to protest low wages and a lack of respect and recognition for workers.
Most school support workers in Alberta have not had a wage increase in over eight years. The average wage for the group is just $34,000 per year.
The rally is sponsored by CUPE locals 474 (Edmonton Public School Board), 1099 (St. Albert School Divison), 2550 (Greater St. Albert Roman Catholic Separate School Division), 3484 (Black Gold Regional Division) and 4625 (Sturgeon School Division).
“Workers have to keep 2-3 jobs to make ends meet, and that means our kids are not getting the support they need,” said CUPE 1099 President Heidi Hovis.
