ESSEX-WINDSOR, ON –/COMMUNITYWIRE/– Anti-Asian racism must be condemned whenever it rears its ugly head. It is troubling that racist comments and actions toward the Asian community are increasing worldwide during the COVID-19 pandemic, and it is shameful that racist statements have been made by an elected official in our own community.

The comments made by Essex Councillor Chris Vander Doelen have become all too common online, and comments such as these have had tragic real-world consequences. These comments have no place online or in Essex-Windsor.

As frontline workers who provide services that help keep members of our community safe during COVID-19, we must do what we can to ensure that all people are kept safe from racist abuse in our communities. The members of CUPE Local 543 want to express our support and solidarity with the Asian community and unequivocally condemn the statements made by Councillor Vander Doelen.
